COMPETITION WINNERS

This year's E-Waste Design Competition was a huge success. Judging for the event was held this past April in front of historical Lincoln Hall on the "quad" of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. A total of $15,000 in tuition support and other prizes were awarded to competing student teams. The two categories, Artist and Geek, acquired six winners in total. Winning teams were awarded gold, silver or bronze (1st, 2nd and 3rd) standing in either category. Several honorable mentions were also awarded in each category. Sponsors for the competition included Walmart, Dell, PC Refurbishers and Recyclers, the Product Interaction Research Laboratory (PIRL) and Microsoft. Judges included Mike Tibbs, Senior Director of Information Technology at Walmart, Rajib Adhikary, Design Strategist at Dell Inc., William Calarese, Microsoft Corporation, Peter Haas, Ph.D., Center for Neighborhood Technology in Chicago, Tim Lindsey, PhD., Associate Director of Technology Assistance at the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center (ISTC,) and Tom Hulsebosch, Partner, West Monroe Partners LLC in Chicago. Special thanks to these companies and their representatives for giving so generously of their time and support and thanks to the students for their excellent innovative designs, hard work, and enthusiasm.
